Regional Coordinator Job Description

(Click here for the RC Ask Outline)

MoveOn councils build the progressive movement by bringing together MoveOn Members locally to develop leadership and organize actions. Each Council works with a Regional Coordinator, who is the member organizer working with several groups in the area.

The Regional Coordinator is the leader who helps build and strengthen all the Councils in the region, and develops other members as local organizers. The main focus is to act as an organizer, not an event planner -- and to support Council Coordinators in their local organizing.

Responsibilities of a Regional Coordinator:

Each Regional Coordinator will develop and work with at least three Councils. In areas where councils have already been established the RC will work to strengthen the existing Councils. In other areas, RCs will help create new Councils. An RC needs to dedicate at least 5 hours a week working with their Councils, working closely with the Field Organizer, who will support your organizing.

Specifically the RCs will:

*Build New Councils and ID Council Coordinators:

In areas without existing Councils, you will recruit Council Coordinators and build new councils. Organizers will help you gain the skills to do this effectively, but the focus is reaching out to MoveOn members in a community and asking folks to work together to hold events and building a core group of leaders.

*Work with each Council Coordinator to build their Council:

RCs will work with Council Coordinators to recruit and train members for the council's core group, including media coordinators, recruitment coordinators, and other key roles.

*Work with Council Coordinators to organize local actions:

The Regional Coordinator trains the Council Coordinator in the process of organizing local events, and then makes sure they have a clear plan for every MoveOn event. The RC is responsible to roll out, prep, and debrief every event with their Council Coordinators.

Expectations of the Regional Coordinator:

*Time Commitment

Regional Coordinators can expect to spend about 25 hours a month on their MoveOn work. You'll be working closely with the Field Organizer to plan how to do your best organizing effectively and efficiently.

*Fast communication is key

Because so much of the role of the RC is making sure that information is flowing freely between the councils you work with and the organizer who you're responsible to, it is important that you be consistent in communication. Your work will be key in quickly communicating upcoming actions to your councils, and making sure that they have the support they need to run successful events. It's especially important to keep up on your email, and when in doubt, pick up the phone and call your organizer or Council Coordinators.

*The Regional Coordinator commits to regular weekly phone calls

The RCs will have one weekly indy call with their Field Organizer, and participate in a group call for the RCs in their region. RCs also have weekly indy calls with their Council Coordinators, and hold group conference calls on a regular basis for their Council Coordinator team.

Qualifications

Regional Coordinators are the backbone of the MoveOn councils, and are strong and powerful leaders in their local areas. Regional Coordinators have passion for the issues we are organizing around, and are committed to helping councils to grow and hold important events. Our power comes from RCs who believe in MoveOn's campaigns, will work hard with other MoveOn members in their area, and works closely with a MoveOn Field Organizer.

It is recommended that Regional Coordinators serve as a Council Coordinator/core member position for several months to gain a powerful understanding of how MoveOn's grassroots organizing works.
