Core Group Member Job Description


MoveOn councils are instrumental in building the progressive movement by bringing together MoveOn members to develop leadership and organize actions. Each Council has a core group-- members who are the leadership team for the Council's work--and each core group member commits to making sure that the Council is growing, developing, and successfully running MoveOn campaigns locally.

Core group members are not an event planners-- but rather are local organizers taking on responsibilities to run local campaigns and expand the Council membership.


Responsibilities of a core group member:

Council's Successful Participation in MoveOn Campaigns:

  • The core group works together as a team to run local campaigns and hold local MoveOn events. The entire core group participates in some way in the work of the campaign as the local organizers of the campaign.

  • Core group members take on specific responsibilities and roles as either a member of the Core Leadership, such as Recruitment Coordinator, Media Coordinator, or join and help build a Council Team around key areas related to the planning of an action. Other roles can include working on materials, outreach, legislative coordination, research etc. The Council should decide which roles are relevant for the particular campaign or event.

  • Participate in prep and debrief for events: The core group members are responsible for working with the Council Coordinator to plan and participate in the prep and debrief work locally before and after each event.


Council Development:

  • Develop new leaders: The core group works to work with all Council members to engage them in the Council's organizing, and look for new leaders to join the core group. The Core group is always looking for new motivated MoveOn members because the key to good organizing is ongoing leadership development.

  • Develop a sense of community: Organizing regular get-togethers and making sure the Council has a social component, and that group is always welcoming to newcomers. It's important to keep our important work fun!


Expectations of a core group member:

  • Core group members can expect to spend 6-8 hours a month on their Council and MoveOn work.

  • Core members will regularly take responsibility for one key task before an action, and involve others in their organizing.

  • The core group is the leadership team-- it's important that the team works together. Core group members also have frequent contact with their Council Coordinator and each other to plan upcoming actions, report back on Council actions and development, and plan for how to strengthen their Council.
  • Core group members also will participate in the core group member orientation and ongoing trainings to support their own leadership development into a stronger local organizer.
