Core Group Member Ask

Here's a general outline for how to ask someone to join your Core Group or take on a Core Group Coordinator role.

If you are recruiting specifically for a Recruitment or Media Coordinator, just substitute that role wherever it says 'core group member'. See below for more details for the Recruitment and Media Coordinator job descriptions.

Connection

Hi, is [NAME] there? Hi, this is [YOUR NAME]. How are you?

Start with some questions to get to know the person you're talking to:

Sample questions: Did you enjoy the event last week? Did you meet some new folks at the event? What do you think of [political event of the moment]?

Context

As you know, we're building a strong MoveOn council here in [TOWN]. This is part of MoveOn's national network of Councils.

(Share with them the MoveOn Council story. Then, talk about the recent work of the local Council.)

MoveOn Councils Story

* With Barack Obama as our new president, we've finally taken our country back. MoveOn's five million members helped elect a community organizer as our most powerful elected official! We have so much to be proud of.

* But our country is still in crisis. The economy is in freefall. Health care is still a pipe dream for millions of Americans. And the Iraq war is still dragging on. So now, the real work begins.

* In the months ahead, we'll push for sweeping legislative action on health care, green jobs, the economic crisis, the Iraq war, and more. MoveOn will be a strong, outside voice to keep Congress and the President honest when lobbyists and corporations threaten to stand in the way of progres

* MoveOn's national network of volunteer Councils have an important role in making change this year -- and we have a three-part plan to make it happen:

  • First, we'll shape the political playing field on the big issues by getting our message out into the local and national media.
  • Second, we'll put direct pressure on Congress to tip some key votes in our favor. We will lobby our elected officials in their hometowns, pressing them to vote for a progressive legislative agenda.
  • And third, we'll organize broader, deeper, and smarter than ever to develop our network of Councils. With everything we do, we're building toward permanent progressive change. This means organizing MoveOn members to be leaders of this movement.

* That's why we need you to join thousands of other committed MoveOn council members in leading our Council network in the major fights ahead in 2009.

Core Group Member Role:

Right now, we need core group members for our council. I wanted to talk to you about what the role is, and see if you can take it on.

Core group members are the backbone of MoveOn Councils. The core group is the leadership team that organizes the local campaign and MoveOn events, and participates in trainings to improve their organizing skills.

(Talk about the work that your core group has been doing to organize recent events).

Commitment

Here's why I think you'll be a great Core Group member and are right for the role:

  • Talk about what this member is good at.

  • Talk about how they're participated in Council organizing in the past.

  • Add in your own experience as a MoveOn Council leader and why it's an exciting role.

Time and communication commitment: (Click here for the Core group member job description)

  • Core members will regularly take responsibility for one key task before an action, and involve others in their organizing.

  • The core group is the leadership team-- it's important that the team works together. Core group members also have frequent contact with their Council Coordinator and each other to plan upcoming actions, report back on Council actions and development, and plan for how to strengthen their Council.

  • Core group members can expect to spend 6-8 hours a month on their Council and MoveOn work.

What questions do you have about the role?

The ask

Will you commit to the core group of our Council?

(If yes) Great! You're going to make a huge difference in our community.

(If no) Thanks for being a member of the Council.

Do you have any questions about the work that MoveOn Councils do, or your role as a core group member?

Next Steps

What are you most excited about in our work? What parts of the role makes you nervous?

Let's set up a time to talk about the next steps. We have a "Core Group member Orientation" for you to participate in to get started. Is there a good time this week to schedule that?

If any questions come up, just give me a call or drop me an email. Talk to you on X time. Thanks!
