Is the vote on the nuclear option really going to happen so soon? I read that it's been delayed.
There have been conflicting reports about the timing of the vote -- several that suggest Republicans are going to move this week--starting Tuesday. What seems clear is that they'll vote on it as soon as possible if they're sure they can win, and no one seems to know exactly how likely this is. If they push the vote back, it's a sign that we're having an impact.
I signed up to speak but now I can’t make it. What should I do?
This is terrifically important to spread the word about what is going on. So if at all possible, please do fulfill your commitment. If that's impossible, see if you can find someone else to replace you. If you really can't find a way to fill your slot, contact your event coordinator (from your event page) and let him/her know you won’t be there. Try to give the coordinator as much notice as possible so he/she can fill your time slot.
Do I have to bring something to read or can I just show up and think of something to say?
Talking for 30 minutes or an hour is harder than you think. It is much easier to bring something to read. Here are some suggestions of things you can read.
What should I read?
You can write something about the right-wing grab for absolute power, or read a good article from the paper, a relevant poem, the preamble to your state’s constitution, or even just the phonebook. Anything is OK, but especially something that emphasizes our long tradition of democracy that the Republicans are messing with. For ideas, see our list of suggested reading materials.
Is it safe to sign up for one of the time slots in the middle of the night?
Yes. We made sure the event was in a safe place. Also, there will always be at least two people there and it will be well lit.
I'm a host, do I need a permit for the location?
Regulations about permits for public gatherings vary from city to city, so your safest bet is to contact local officials in advance. In general though, rallies on public property that don't block vehicular or pedestrian traffic are ok without a special permit. On private property, you always need to get the property owner's permission. Unfortunately, MoveOn doesn't have the resources to provide individual legal advice for each event, but if you have questions, we'll do our best to provide a helping hand.
