Susan G. Komen for the Cure announced that it is reversing its decision to ban grants to organizations under politically motivated investigation. The bad news is that it's not clear that it will continue funding Planned Parenthood.
Planned Parenthood health centers are often the main source of health care for women in underserved communities, and they provide 830,000 breast exams every year. Without Komen's funding, up to 170,000 women could be unable to get the screenings and early detection of breast cancer that save lives.
Without a public commitment to funding breast health care through Planned Parenthood, Komen could find a new excuse to eliminate funding, as it already tried to do. And Komen's vice president of public policy, Karen Handel, is an outspoken opponent of funding for Planned Parenthood. To be sure that Komen keeps politics out of women's health, it must commit to funding breast health grants through Planned Parenthood, and fire Karen Handel.
Tell Susan G. Komen for the Cure to commit to funding ongoing breast health services through Planned Parenthood.
