One of the most devastating assaults against our democracy occurred on January 21st of this year when the U.S. Supreme Court in a 5-4 ruling held that corporate funding of political broadcasts in candidate elections cannot be limited. The effect of this ruling ...(more)allows corporations to pump as much money as they want into elections, certainly outstripping what you or I could contribute, and essentially enabling them to “buy” the candidate that would favor them once elected/reelected. If you add this to the huge sums of money that our candidates for national office have to raise each week (over $20,000 on average) to win an election or to remain in office, the temptations are obvious and the results very distressing. Once elected, these members of congress, when they get to Washington, are subjected on a daily basis to the lobbyists of these same corporations, often prior congressmen or congressional staffers, to slide into this money pit and “sell” their votes – often at odds with the desires of their constituents at home. We must break this cycle of money-for-votes that allow corporations buy our political system at our expense. Join us!.
