Untitled Document Dear MoveOn member,

Last night, the Associated Press wrote a story bound to misinform voters. Writing about McCain's vice presidential pick, the AP claimed, "Many liberals are belittling the choice, suggesting that as a mother of five children...she has neither the time nor the experience to become vice president." But they couldn't quote a single Democrat saying anything like that.

Writing a whole story based on an unsubstantiated premise is not credible journalism. Unfortunately, this is just the latest in a well-documented string of AP articles slanted against Democrats and in favor of John McCain.2

Ron Fournier, the AP's new Washington Bureau chief, may be the source of the problem. Fournier's objectivity recently came into question after revelations that he talked to the McCain campaign last year about becoming a senior political adviser.3 Congress even found an email he wrote in 2004 telling Karl Rove to "Keep up the fight."4

Can you email the AP's Ron Fournier and his two bosses? Tell them that the public is depending on the AP to provide unbiased 2008 election reporting, and the pro-Republican bias of Ron Fournier's bureau is becoming obvious. It must stop.

Here are their emails:

Ron Fournier, AP Washington D.C. Bureau Chief, rfournier@ap.org
Michael Oreskes, AP Managing Editor, moreskes@ap.org
Kathleen Carroll, AP Executive Editor, at kcarroll@ap.org

The most effective emails are those that are factual, well reasoned, and polite.

Under Fournier's leadership, the AP has increasingly moved from straight news to commentary slanted against Democrats. Some stories written by Fournier about Democrats this election cycle include: "Biden pick shows lack of confidence," "Sen. Hillary Clinton an Artful Dodger," "Obama walks arrogance line," and "Clinton's Politics of Pity."5

A recent report by media watchdog group Media Matters showed no equal attacks by Fournier on Republicans. In fact, he wrote only one negative piece about Republicans during the entire presidential primary--and that was criticizing Mitt Romney for beating John McCain in the Michigan primary!6

And just last week, the AP belittled Barack Obama's convention speech--despite praise by newspapers around the country and even top Republicans.7 MSNBC's Keith Olbermann said their analysis "strikes me as having borne no resemblance to the speech that you and I just watched. None whatsoever...[It's] a remarkable failure of that news organization."8 Enough is enough.

Can you email the AP's Ron Fournier and his two bosses? Let them know we need unbiased reporting from the AP during this important election, and that Ron Fournier's bureau must stop its pattern of attacking Democrats and favoring John McCain.
