When you asked the Senator if they would do everything in their power to stop this deal if it includes the reported cuts to Social Security benefits, what did they say?

Their Reply

What Other MoveOn Members Are Hearing

I sent a message saying raising the age for medicare and social security by a year is a good idea. You are not correct to not support this. With increased life expectancy peoples retirement is actually longer than it was 15 years ago. The burden should not be on the youth to support us older folks. I am 66 and still working.

His office said that he has not released a statement on this issue but that he opposes any cuts to SS.

— Spearfish, 2012-12-18 08:50:16

the person I talked to didn't know anything about any deal he told me that Johnson doesn't support cuts to social security but nothing concrete and as far as Thune and Noem are concerned they have no mind of their own they are rubber stamps for the right wing

Would let the Senator know.

I call his office and spoke to his aid and she told me that he has always been supportive of social security. I told her specifically that we rely on the benefits as it is our primary source of income. I told that we live in Mexico because we CAN NOT live in the USA on a SS income and are forced to live in Mexico. She was shocked. I told her to tell the Senator that and I would like his response via my email.

Very congenial discussion with staffer; he thanked me for my call and promised to convey my message to the Senator.

— Willet, 2012-12-18 10:07:44

Spoke with aid and relayed message to stop any cuts to ss.

— zapata, 2012-12-18 10:14:02

They were very polite and would pass on the message

— Aberdeen, 2012-12-18 11:07:00

The aide said he would pass my msg on to the senator

— Box Elder, 2012-12-18 11:28:57

Senator Johnson's office also told me he opposes any cuts but it really was just a "rote" answer.

— Crescent City, 2012-12-18 13:23:38

Save social security! No cuts! No compromise!

Told his aid to let Tim to know that I am strongly against cuts to SS benefits and also Tax Break for 2% rich people.

— Sioux Falls, 2012-12-18 13:48:06

I was told the Senator was a long time supporter of SS and the message would get to him and I responded tell him I am counting on him!

To even think about cutting SSI or Medicare is horrendous and going back on what the Dems campaigned on. These programs have no business being in on deficit cuts, as they do not affect the deficit. Because of the stagnate wages for years, right to work laws , no cost of living wages, employers not offering insurance and many other problems that affect us common workers, we have no savings or very little. Yes, we feel we paid in and this money is our benefits, and they are not entitlements. I will be working until 70, then have to move out of my house of nearly 38 years and find a cheaper placer to live and hope the little I get will keep me alive. It is a very grim future for me and alot of others.

I spoke to a staffer. He said he would pass on the message and thanked me for calling.
