What Other MoveOn Members Are Hearing

I spoke to a person in her office, he said he would relay the message. I have no idea what her position is on this.

— Southern Pines, 2012-12-18 07:01:09

No answer, guess they are on vacation. Again!

— Chapel Hill, 2012-12-18 07:29:09

Only recently began receiving SS benefits which is a blessing, and of course, I paid into this program. Not fair to cut these benefits and continue to help high income earners. & Thanks for her help in this matter.

— Pittsboro, 2012-12-18 07:31:11

We elected President Obama because we believe in the course he wishes to steer this country!! Do not cave in to the Republican agenda!

— Cary, 2012-12-18 07:32:30

Left message and email address on recorder

— Charlotte, 2012-12-18 07:41:53

I LEFT A MESSAGE ON THE VOICE MACHINE.

— Charlotte, 2012-12-18 07:44:33

Called, Left a message with Taylor. SS Benefits are not yours to cut. If so, please return mine so I can use them to hire more staff, not your staff's and wisher's.

— Charlotte, 2012-12-18 07:50:47

I left a phone message asking Senator Hagen not to cut Social Security which I'll start receiving in January.

— Davidson, 2012-12-18 07:56:48

Senator Hagan is totally opposed to ANY changes in SS or Medicare that would reduce benefits.

— Rocky Mount, 2012-12-18 07:59:41

She will do what she can to stop the cuts to Social Security.

— Durham, 2012-12-18 08:01:19

I had to leave message and email Address

— Jamestown,, 2012-12-18 08:03:14

I asked Senator Hagan to resist both the $400,000 cut-off and the tighter Inflation Index for Social Security. i emphasized that elders have an actual inflation index that is higher than the one currently used, so she should at least fight for the current index.

— Chapel Hill, 2012-12-18 08:04:09

Left a message along with my email address. I hope to get a response.

— Chapel Hill, 2012-12-18 08:19:50

I have written Sen Burr and Hagan stating that. Burr says we must cut, no answer from Hagan. I wrote on my company letterhead.

— WILMINGTON, 2012-12-18 08:20:10

Staff said Senator Hagan does not intend to vote on any Bill that would further burden the seniors and does not support social security Medicare cuts!

— Asheville, 2012-12-18 08:20:28

Told they were not entitlements.

— Lincolnton, 2012-12-18 08:20:35

I was told that Senator Hagan was aware the people of NC were wanting to protect their Social Security and then asked for my name and address.

— Reidsville, 2012-12-18 08:20:46

Said Senator Hagen has said in the past that she feels Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid should not be part of the fiscal cliff deal. I said I hoped she will vote that way and I will be watching her voting record in the Senate. Left my name and zip code as requested by staff member who answered the telephone.

— Chapel Hill, 2012-12-18 08:22:09

I left a voice mail message.

— Durham, 2012-12-18 08:24:33

Staff person said "Senator Hagan has said that she is opposed to all cuts for Social Security."

— Raleigh, 2012-12-18 08:25:47

Please don't mess with our Social Security. PLEASE.

— Shallotte, 2012-12-18 08:38:36

I spoke with one of the senator's aid's and she told me Senator Hagen is opposed to any cuts to Social Security.

— carrboro, 2012-12-18 08:38:56

I failed to ask directly. Sorry. He just said he would forward my comment to the senator.

— Los Angeles, 2012-12-18 08:39:22

Left a message to have the president stand his ground, especially when it comes to as age limits and spending. I think 400 k and above is ok. I also asked for gun control to be brought up, especially assault weapons and thanked her for her dedication and keep up thefood work and have a great holiday too!!!

— MONROE, 2012-12-18 08:46:11

Spoke to a person, he said he'd relay my message.

— Hope Mills, 2012-12-18 08:46:30

Left a voicemail to please not allow any bill that would allow changes in Medicare while keeping in place ANY Bush-era tax breaks for the wealthy. Clayton, NC

— raleigh, 2012-12-18 08:47:54

I was only able to leave message and my e-mail address.

— Goldsboro, 2012-12-18 08:48:21

That people in our area depended upon the SS benefits earned over 40-50 years of work and expected her to not support cuts.

— Oakboro, 2012-12-18 08:52:11

Left a message and a voicemail- Durham

— , 2012-12-18 08:52:33

I spoke with a lady on her staff, she said Senator Hagan will not support cuts to social security. No deal has been agreed on.

— Scotland Neck, 2012-12-18 09:01:00

My wife and I each left a message, stating that we oppose any cuts to Social Security, Medicare, & Medicaid, PERIOD, and that these topics should in NO WAY be a part of "fiscal cliff" talks!

— Waynesville, 2012-12-18 09:02:06

I spoke with a person on her staff. He said he would be sure she got the message.

— Morganton, 2012-12-18 09:06:58

If it's true that the resident is backing down on the position he ran on, my last hope is that the Senate stands firm. Why negotiate from a position of strength on taxes above $250K incomes and earned benefits? Doesn't make sense! Not again!!

— Cary, 2012-12-18 09:07:00

THEY WOULD PASS THE MESSAGE ON TO THE SENATOR.

— Hendersonville, 2012-12-18 09:10:15

They said she is opposed to "drastic cuts" to SS, medicaid, but when I asked specifically about the current proposals, the answer was non-specific.

— Fayetteville, 2012-12-18 09:11:03

Left message and email address.

— Matthews, 2012-12-18 09:11:40

I didn't talk to anyone, I just left the message and my email adress

— Salisbury, 2012-12-18 09:12:21

i left a message

— Raleigh, 2012-12-18 09:14:31

She is said to be definitely opposed to the cuts because so many people depend on social security!

— Durham, 2012-12-18 09:19:07

I stated earned benefits should not be used to balance a deficit caused by tax cuts, unfunded wars, and a deregulated financial sector caused recession. We should raise taxes on those who have benefited from recent policies not from those who have suffered. The staff member said she agrees.

— Burlington, 2012-12-18 09:19:22

said he'd relay the message.

— Cary, 2012-12-18 09:19:57

Please do not support cuts to Medicare. I am currently on disability and Medicare is the only way that my medical bills can be paid. I had to filed bankruptcy in 2007, prior to receiving Medicare, due to my inability to pay my medical bills.I don't want to go down that road again if Medicare benefits are cut. Please, I ask of you, to be a champion of the people of NC, by not supporting financial cuts the Medicare system.

— Chapel Hill, 2012-12-18 09:20:44

Spoke with an aid in her office and made my feeling know in no uncertain terms to make NO cuts to SS Benefits. The aid said that it has been Kay's stance from the beginning that NO cuts to SS, no changes to the COLA has been something she has supported from the beginning. The aid said she will pass this on to the floor. We shall watch & see how Kay votes....Burr, well, he's just a wealthy hard hearted idiot with not one ioda of understanding of how real people live, especially seniors.

— High Point, 2012-12-18 09:21:00

STAND on the side of FAIRNESS, LOGIC and common sense - and REPRESENT the majority of American tax payers. NO MORE TAX BREAKS for those making more than 250k/year. NO MORE TAX BREAKS for greedy corporations. NO CUTS to our important social support systems (Social Security, Medicare and such) - If the very troubled young man in CT could have gotten proper care thru medical benefits - perhaps 20 little children would still be dreaming of Santa Claus rather than being burried in the cold dark earth long before their time. ENOUGH INSANITY - Please do your part to represent the majority of hard working American people and STAND UP to the party of Greed. The time to act is NOW senator - please help us - we are counting on you to be strong. FEAR NOT - WE THE PEOPLE are watching and we are behind fairness all the way!

— Cary, 2012-12-18 09:22:35

Told her how hard I campaigned for her and not to disappoint THE PEOPLE who elected her!

— Black Mountain, 2012-12-18 09:26:58

I had to leave a voice mail for Senator Hagan & leave my email address so she can get back to us. I told her we as Seniors cannot afford a 5% cut. My raise this year was $10, it went from $822 a month to $833. Medicare went up almost $5 and my medicare supplement went up a lot more than that. There are other places to cut than Social Security and the money that Seniors depend on to live. I did not call Senator Burr as talking to him is like talking to the wall. He doesn't represent us only the wealthy in our district.

— West Haven, 2012-12-18 09:27:13

No Cuts to Social programs UNTIL you cut DoD

— Greensboro, 2012-12-18 09:29:16

Please don't make any cuts to Social Security. Instead, cut back on those expensive vacations that the Obamas are taking at the expense of taxpayers and their White House parties to the Hollywood crowd. Moreover, cut out the social drinking & parties & serve punch and that's a good start. I'm so disappointed in this administration and am sorry to be called a Democrat.

— Greenville, 2012-12-18 09:29:20

I urged her to not cut Social Security benefits!

— Pinehurst, 2012-12-18 09:29:22

OOPS- I didn't do it correctly. I left a voice message so I didn't talk to anyone. I'll let you know what their answer is..

— Charlotte, 2012-12-18 09:29:27

spoke to office staff - said they would pass along my desire. why give sen. burr a free pass on this. light his phones up too. the other side always attacks our sen.'s why not play offense intstead of defense all time. burr Phone: (202) 224-3154

— Fayetteville, 2012-12-18 09:29:48

This is the stupidest idea ever! I just spent the last six months canvassing and telling people that only the Democrats would stand up for Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid and Obama is already in there giving away the store. We need you to put the brakes on ANY changes to these programs! If you want to see a mass uprising on the part of the public, just go ahead and vote for it. There will be hell to pay.

— Sugar Grove, 2012-12-18 09:29:51

Senator Hagan is against cuts to medicare or Social Security,

— , 2012-12-18 09:30:56

Please do cut social security. I only will get $250, which no one can live on.

— , 2012-12-18 09:34:10

No commitment. Just "she will get the message."

— Charlotte, 2012-12-18 09:37:42

I think I left a message. I got an answer machine that told me thank you and goodbye. I then left a message. If I don't hear from her, I'll call again.

— Chapel Hill, 2012-12-18 09:39:49

Left voice mail on machine.

— Cary, 2012-12-18 09:40:04

I spoke with someone in her office, she said that Kay Hagan, is considering everything on the table... In my opinion Mrs. Hagan stands for nothing, and will fall for anything, with a statement like that!

— charlotte, 2012-12-18 09:41:00

Spoke with an assistant who said the Senator was against cuts to SS or raising the age for retirement

— Charlotte, 2012-12-18 09:41:00

I left a message on their VM with my name and e-mail and phone number-from Charlotte, N.C. I work with people with DD so they can not afford to have their SSI or SSDI cut as well or their services that Medicaid pays for.

— Charlotte, 2012-12-18 09:41:11

I received a canned letter that stated "Our current path is unsustainable and our fiscal challenges will require a thoughtful, bipartisan solution that gets us on the right track and encourages economic growth. Rest assured, I will keep your thoughts in mind as fiscal matters and tax policy are further debated in the Senate." It doesn't sound like she cares much about this!!

— Thomasville, 2012-12-18 09:41:30

Called Senator Hagan office and left a comment on the voice mail message asking her to fight for our SS benefits and not agree to SS cuts.

— Charlotte, 2012-12-18 09:41:48

Talked with staff directly said Senator Hagan does not support a change in Social Security

— shelby, 2012-12-18 09:43:22

talked with office staff and they assured me she would get message

— Charlotte, 2012-12-18 09:48:53

— Arden, 2012-12-18 09:53:34

Dear Senator Hagen, I do not support any cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. I do believe there are other programs that can be decreased, such as defense spending. Thank you

— Durham, 2012-12-18 09:54:29

asked for my zip code and thanked me for calling

— Chapel HIll, 2012-12-18 09:54:36

i sent an email

— Chapel Hill, 2012-12-18 09:55:15

The first call I made to one of her offices they said that, Mrs. Hagan is putting everything on the table, Then I called another office and I was told that, Mrs. Hagan does oppose any cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security...

— , 2012-12-18 09:56:04

I left a message and my email address. My message is that it's better to go over the ill named fiscal cliff than settle for changing the COLA formula, etc. Mentioned that my COLA went up 1.7% but Medicare Part B went up 5% & my AARP supplemental went up 7%. I should have added "We need to limit increases in Medicare, etc. to the same percentage of the COLA increase." Ron Leigh Charlotte, NC rpm8700@msn.com

— Paw Creek, 2012-12-18 09:56:05

I called and got voice message and I left message;senator you need to do everything in your power not let them mess with our social security

— Morrisville, 2012-12-18 10:02:10

I left a message with my email as requested by their voicemail

— McKinleyville, 2012-12-18 10:02:14

Asked about her position on cuts to Social Security and raising the age for medicare---was told that she is opposed to both. Figured as much but wanted to make sure.

— Zebulon, 2012-12-18 10:03:51

Did it.

— Asheville, 2012-12-18 10:10:16

Please do not cut Social Security Benefits, this my only means of income and I work for this money.Nobody gave it to me.

— Williamston, 2012-12-18 10:11:36

Left message with aide that I am opposed cuts to Soc. Sec.

— Newsom, 2012-12-18 10:12:12

All I could do was to leave a message. However, my experience with Sen. Hagan has been very favorable. I am trusting that her position is the same as ours. Forget any attempts to sway Sen. Burr. I wish he would retire. He used to brag that no one in Congress was right or him, but that may no longer be true with the tea party boneheads.

— Surf City, 2012-12-18 10:12:12

got her machine. No surprise. told her to help Obama realize there IS no daling with Boehner and the republicans and informed her that the democratic party will lose my vote if Obama backs down.

— Raleigh, 2012-12-18 10:13:39

Her aide said that Senator Hagan is opposed to any cuts in Social Security and Medicare.

— Mills River, 2012-12-18 10:13:54

— Chapel Hill, 2012-12-18 10:15:14

— Wilmington, 2012-12-18 10:21:42

We have paid for SS for years. It is not an Entitlement program and not yours to cut.

— Hendersonville, 2012-12-18 10:26:22

TALKED TO TAZ WHO SAID KAY WOULD DO EVERYTHING SHE CAN TO PROTECT BOTH S.S. AND MEDICARE.

— Brevard, 2012-12-18 10:48:39

The reply from the staffer was, "Have a good day."

— Carrboro, 2012-12-18 10:51:07

said she was against any cuts in senior benefits

— Richfield, 2012-12-18 10:51:19

I was told that Sen. Hagan does not want to vote for any cuts that will harm the people in NC that use the benefits. We'll see.

— Mount Holly, 2012-12-18 10:54:19

I spoke with an aide. He mentioned that Senator Hagen is not in favor of cutting any benefits to people in need.

— Raleigh, 2012-12-18 10:56:51

Support our retirement. Make the rich over 200k pay nose bleed taxes as they should

— chapel hill, 2012-12-18 10:57:38

According to staff, "she leans toward protecting seniors in her state." Senator Hagan NEVER commits to anything. I mentioned that eliminating the FICA cap would keep Social Security solvent and he said that he understood that Obama and the speaker "had mentioned that."

— Pittsboro, 2012-12-18 11:04:06

Automated pick up. Left a message.

— Mooresville, 2012-12-18 11:09:26

No one answered when I chose the option to speak with a staffer so I left a message.

— Apex, 2012-12-18 11:13:14

I left a recorded message - this was after I emailed earlier today. The fiscal cliff is imaginary. And I'm tired of being held hostage to the right wing and corporations.

— Durham, 2012-12-18 11:13:23

The staffer I talked to said she has made a statement that she won't support cutting Social Security or any programs seniors depend on. When I asked if she will stand firm on that he said that is her statement, which sounded less than resolute to me. I also asked him to note that I oppose keeping the tax cuts for the rich.

— East Durham, 2012-12-18 11:13:39

Line to staff busy. Left email address and phone number with inquiry about her position on SS, Medicare, Medicaid cuts. I expressed strong opposition to any cuts in these.

— Brevard, 2012-12-18 11:15:51

I called Senator Hagen's number and chose to speak with a staff member. No one answered so I called back and left a message. I left a message asking that Sen. Hagen not support a move to the Chained CPI and not to cut benefits in Medicare or Medicaid. I also asked that she not support raising the eligibility age of Medicare.

— Clayton, 2012-12-18 11:18:31

Ask that the senator hold firm on not taking away senior/disabled/low income benefits to balance the budget and not make the super rich pay their fair share of taxes. The office assistant said that he would give her the message.

— Asheville, 2012-12-18 11:21:13

PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES AND SENIORS DEPEND ON SOCIAL SECURITY, MEDICARE, ADN MEDICAID TO LIKE. DON'T TAKE AWAY THEIR LIVES! CUT WAIST IN BUREAUCRACY NOT SERVICES.

— Charlotte, 2012-12-18 11:22:18

I am sickened by this. A very liberal and strong Democrat through and through I am disgusted with President Obama for even speaking about this. Social Security has nothing to do with the debt and he is abandoning us who voted for him if he caves yet again to Republican backmail.

— Candler, 2012-12-18 11:24:34

I spoke to someone in Senator Kay Hagan's office and she said that these were not the Senators words but that she is quite sure that she would not agree to any cuts to the Social Security benifits and that she would pass the message along to the Senator.

— Apex, 2012-12-18 11:30:47

She is opposed to all changes that would impose a burden on the elderly - I said I hoped her voting would reflect the same.

— Mount Holly, 2012-12-18 11:30:56

No one answered on the ext. for an assistant, so I left a message on her comment line and my email address with a request to answer my question.

— Hickory, 2012-12-18 11:37:23

Pressed 0ption to speak with staff but line was busy. Called again to leave a voice message for the Senator. Was cut off before I could leave the requested email address...but I was able to make my request clear and the fact that I'm a concerned voter from Charlotte.

— Charlotte, 2012-12-18 11:40:26

could not reach her at this #

— Knotts Island, 2012-12-18 11:52:34

— Pineville, 2012-12-18 12:03:14

Like others, I left a message with someone in her office -- with no indication as to her views on this.

— Alexander, 2012-12-18 12:07:27

Staff said the. Senator will do all she can to stop any cuts to SS

— new bern, 2012-12-18 12:12:02

a clerk said that they would leave a message

— marshville, 2012-12-18 12:16:30

I left a voicemail message on behalf of myself and my wife. Both of us are seniors and are concerned that others reaching retirement age are protected from losing their benefits plus taking away cost of living increase amounts to a cut in benefits which most seniors cannot afford. If the government refrained from dipped into the Social Security kitty, Social Security would be more than solvent at this point and decades to come. Seniors shouldn't have to pay for government mismanagement with their retirement program they contributed to for decades.

— Asheville, 2012-12-18 12:18:54

I was able to leave a message and my e-mail address.

— Charlotte, 2012-12-18 12:20:29

Spoke with a staff member who said Senator Hagan is against any cuts to Social Security but wasn't sure if that was a a red line that she wouldn't cross should the majority of issues be covered in the negotiations. I said I would be 100% opposed to supporting Senator Hagan in the future should she NOT draw a line in the sand regarding this issue.

— Whittier, 2012-12-18 12:20:42

Spoke to an assistant who said "I'll pass your message along!" Hope she gets it!

— Shady Brook, 2012-12-18 12:20:58

Left a message first thanking Sen. Hagan for her efforts to protect the NC environment and then asked her to defend the contract I made with the US government 40 years ago when I entered the workforce and started paying SS taxes.

— Walnut Cove, 2012-12-18 12:32:05

only got a recorded message, but left an ardent appeal to uphold the middle class and senior, and ask the wealthiest Americans to do a little bit more so some people can eat and have medical care. My Dad was a veteran and deserves what he has- he's not "lazy and entitled".

— Bahama, 2012-12-18 12:38:38

I requested an email I also talked to a staff member. No results yet.

— Grace, 2012-12-18 12:48:11

I reminded Senator Hagan that I met her when she campaigned here in Boone and urged her to block cuts in the SS benefits.

— Boone, 2012-12-18 12:48:26

Left a message.

— Wilmington, 2012-12-18 12:49:09

— Franklinton, 2012-12-18 12:49:17

— Waxhaw, 2012-12-18 12:51:00

Please stop the deal on cutting Social Security. Do you can to stop this. Thanks Sadie Davis Sadie4232@hotmail.com

— Apex, 2012-12-18 12:52:40

They promised to give Senator Hagan my message that we are counting on her to make sure that there is NO DEAL that includes for cuts in Social security, especially to cost of living increases NOR to Medicare, especially to eligibility age.

— Bakersville, 2012-12-18 12:52:59

All I got was an opportunity to leave a message which I did.

— Browns Summit, 2012-12-18 12:57:11

Left message with her office. Told woman on phone I'd campaigned for President Obama specifically so there would be no cuts to Social Security and Medicare. She asked for my name and zip code and said she'd be sure Sen. Hagan got the message.

— Huntersville, 2012-12-18 12:57:20

We elected President Obama because the he believes is a strong middle class and that social security is part of that. Do not cave in to the Republicans.

— Wake Forest, 2012-12-18 12:57:31

To paraphrase the words of her representative he said essentially that although she feels everything should be on the table she is resistant to cutting the benefits for retired persons. I said that I've supported the Democrats forever and the prime reason is their commitment to social programs for the poor, elderly and the average citizen as opposed to the Republicans who have continuously fought to water down these programs if not tried to totally eradicate them ever since they were first implemented by Democrats.

— Durham, 2012-12-18 13:01:29

— Waynesville, 2012-12-18 13:09:27

I spoke to Senator Hagen's Office and told the young man that I had worked for 30+ years and paid into SS. I also told to tell her that I live in Chapel Hill, NC and she is up to be re-elected in 2014 and that my fiends and I will work very hard to get her not elected. I also left my email address.

— Chapel Hill, 2012-12-18 13:13:28

They acknowledged my comment, asked my name and zip code and offered to add me to their email list. I provided my email address also.

No idea what her position is on this new deal.

— Venice, 2012-12-18 13:14:45

I told her I activekly campaigned for her, live in Charlotte and I am a 62 yr. old teacher, I asked her to save social security from any cuts to benefits and also to protect Medicare: a safety net that is so important in this economic downturn!

— Charlotte, 2012-12-18 13:19:18

I just called

— Denver, 2012-12-18 13:19:39

Do NOT Allow this to happen. We allways had sS Taken out of our pay and in some cases paid in more at years end, while congress was frittering their share away on pet projects or taking orders from the likes of the notorious Koch Bros. Thank You Ed & Vera Link

— Hickory, 2012-12-18 13:19:58

Thew representative of Senator Hagan noted the opposition of my wife and I to cuts in social security.

— Rutherfordton, 2012-12-18 13:26:32

— Morganton, 2012-12-18 13:37:50

Phone range a very long time. Left message with male staffer. Shared my opinion on protecting SS from cuts. Also, asked her to support stronger gun control. He said he would pass the message on to Kay Hagan.

— Clyde, 2012-12-18 13:38:23

I talked to a nice person in her office who said she wouldn't be for a deal that "balanced the budget on the backs of seniors". I told her I am a senior, but have other means of income and even give a lot of our own soc sec away to needy relatives who don't have other safety nets, but that I was calling for all the seniors who need every penny of soc sec. and that includes the chained CPI change which Obama is considering. I get it on that deal, but could it be means tested--in other words, wouldn't hurt us in a high income bracket but would really hurt the low soc sec recipients.

— Brevard, 2012-12-18 13:38:47

For those of us who are not recieving a substantial amount in SS already it would be davastating to take a 5% cut in SS we voted for President Obamato hold his grown and not cave in to the republicans.

— Charlotte, 2012-12-18 13:40:16

I left a message with her office. I was asked my name and was told that she would get the message. ----Durham,NC 27705 12/18/2012

— asheville, 2012-12-18 14:30:53

In my message, I also pointed out that my mother is a constituent of the Senator in North Carolina and who relies on social security for her income. Any cut to her monthly benefit would be very bad for her.

— Raleigh, 2012-12-18 14:32:43

Please oppose cuts to social security and medicare. I need to count on you.

— Greenville, 2012-12-18 14:36:30

I asked that she vote to stop this and they said they will pass it along to Senator Hagan.

Thank you for your efforts . Lest not forget that it will be easier for a Camel to go thru the eye of a needle, than for a rich person to get to Heaven . Mhhh , and those who want to make cuts are not getting any younger , but closer to their sunsets , or their dark night of the soul.

Did not say nothing or will not up

— Greensboro, 2012-12-18 19:34:26

Please don't mess with Social Security! I paid into Social Security for 32 years, and now that Im about to receive it ,Im looking toward it,being that my husband has been deceased now for sixteen years. This would be very devastating to soo many seniors. Are their other places where cuts can be made without tampering with Social Security?

— elizabeth city, 2012-12-18 19:51:25

I wish you would offer multiple or alternative options to calling our reps., etc. You leave out the support of many of us who otherwise can't do that, who live on limited income, and who have limited options, such as few minutes/month on their phone--too few for this kind of option. One option is to provide contact pages for our representatives. For example, for Senator Kay Hagan, that webpage is: http://www.hagan.senate.gov/?p=form&id=6 I went to that page and left this message: Dear Senator Hagan, I was surprised to see that in moveon.org's latest message about keeping Social Security off the chopping block, they list you as "wavering." That was a shock and a disappointment. I live on SS @ $642 a month and am not in self-sustaining good health. It's impossible to make that work, so everything has been a greater challenge than I care to admit. If our government chops that, then what do i do? And I know I'm lots better off than many others. Please stand firm for voters like me who chose you as our advocate and representative because we believed you have our interests at heart. I know you have a much stronger stance for military interests than most of us who voted for you are able to appreciate. That brings to mind a proposal suggested by www.wethepeoplenow.org, overwhelmingly replete with well-researched data that could make a superlative approach, at least from the standpoint of us ordinary voting constituents who fought hard to get people like you into or back into office, in to provide a more economically and otherwise just means to get our country back onto its feet and sidestep the so-called “fiscal cliff” altogether. Here is the webpage where that can be found: http://www.wethepeoplenow.org/funding_sources_outline.htm A just world is not one that feeds the insatiable appetites of special interests that already have more money than g*d. To me, the military budget feeds quite a handful of those types of interests. My point is, Social Security and Medicare, etc. are programs that benefit card-carrying voters and other essential means to sustain the people who ARE this country. Please don’t let anything sway you out of this as what counts, fiscally and morally. Thank you. Sincerely, Rachael Rocamora PS: Didn't know if there would be room here, but little or much, what follows is what's on the webpage cited above: Attachment B to The Strategic Plan for a Peaceful, Prosperous, Just World DRAFT Summary of Funding Sources and Cost Avoidance Measures (Revised December 13, 2012) I. Purpose and Objectives: This summary of potential funding sources and cost avoidance measures A. Outlines the primary causes of deficit spending and the large national debt and corrections for these causes B. Outlines Funding Sources and Cost Avoidance Measures C. Clearly shows that there are more than sufficient funds to: 1. Accomplish the work in the Common Agenda For the Nov- Dec, 2012 Lame Duck Session and the 113th Congress including employment opportunities for all the current unemployed and underemployed at meaningful work at a living wage and ensuring all the people of the United States have adequate, decent warm shelter, nutritious food, water, clothing and healthcare by December 21, 2012. 2. Easily manage the elements of the so called fiscal cliff 3. Eliminate the annual deficit 4. Pay down the national debt and remove the need to increase the limit on it. 5. Alleviate any need for austerity programs. 6. Phase out income, estate, gift, capitol gain and sales taxes after a progressive tax is invoked on the property and assets of corporations and individuals D. Debunk the notions that there must be austerity programs, cuts in social programs, medicare and social security and shows that the fear mongering over debt reduction and the fiscal cliff is a Trojan Horse to provide cover to start eliminating medicare and social security and decrease corporation taxes even more. II. Primary Causes of Deficit Spending and the National Debt A. U.S. wastes about 90% of the trillion dollars spent annually on illegal wars, occupations, nuclear and other offensive weapons, covert operations, overseas bases and facilities, huge standing armies, etc. even though we have no credible enemies. B. The Federal Reserve unconstitutionally creates money as debt instead of the Government printing its own money. This has cost the U.S. Government over $8 trillion in interest payments over the past 24 years. C. The Federal Reserve, the U.S. Treasury, FDIC, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have provided at least $23.7 trillion and apparently as much as $37 trillion of bailouts, grants, zero or very low interest loans and loan guaranties to American and foreign financial institutions. D. “Wall Street's insatiable greed caused the Great Crash of 2008 in which eight million Americans lost their jobs and business, personal tax revenues plummeted, expenditures rose to assist the unemployed and deficits rose. Wall Street is still collecting obscene bonuses.” Leopold, Les, 8 Reasons Wall Street Greed Is the Cause, and the Solution, To Phony Fiscal CliffCrisis, AlterNet, November 30, 2012 Close E. Many corporations pay little or even no taxes and are attempting to use the fiscal cliff to pay less 1. U.S. corporations have fought paying taxes since at least the Civil War, despite building their businesses with American research and infrastructure. a. For every dollar of workers' payroll tax paid in the 1950s, corporations paid three dollars. Now it's 22 cents b. An amount equal to ONE-HALF the GDP, $8 to $12 trillion, is held untaxed overseas by rich Americans and American corporations resulting in an annual tax loss of about $260 billion c. Corporations stopped paying HALF OF THEIR TAXES after the recession. After paying an average of 22.5% from 1987 to 2008, corporations have paid an annual rate of 10% since. This represents a sudden $250 billion annual loss in taxes Bucheit, Paul, “Ten Numbers the Rich Would Like Fudged”, Alternet, November 2012 Close . 2. According to the report: The CEO Campaign to ‘Fix’ the Debt: A Trojan Horse for Massive Corporate Tax Breaks authored by Sarah Anderson and Scott Klinger, Institute for Policy Studies and released November 13, 2012: a. The Bush Tax Cuts for the richest 2% cost the Treasury about $100 billion a year b. U.S. corporate income taxes as a percentage of the nation’s total tax receipts, stand at a 50-year low, even as corporate profits are peaking at a 50-year high. c. More than 80 CEOs of America’s most powerful corporations are using the “Fiscal Cliff” scare tactics and the ‘Fix’ the Debt Campaign (www.fixthedebt.org) as a Trojan Horse to reduce corporate taxes and shift costs onto the poor and elderly by less spending on earned-benefit programs, such as Social Security and Medicare, while promoting a rash of corporate tax breaks as what they call “pro-growth tax reform”. This scheme if successful will exploit the poor and elderly, increase the debt, hurt the 99%, grow the salaries of these CEO’s not the economy. d. Of these CEOs at publicly held firms, 24 received more in compensation last year than their corporations paid in federal corporate income taxes. All but six of these firms reported U.S. profits last year. III. Funding Sources and Cost Avoidance Measures: No layoffs will result from these actions; transfers will be necessary. *Priority items for the Lame Duck Session are marked with an asterisk. Planning should begin for all other items during the Lame Duck Session. *1. Reprogram 100% of the funding and budgets for wars, occupations, nuclear weapons, covert operations, overseas bases and facilities the war on terror, torture, assassinations, secret arrests, renditions, abusive treatment of detainees, use of paramilitaries, spying on the people of the U.S. and armed drones. (Common Agenda Items #2 and #3) *2. Reprogram all but about $100 billion of the remaining annual current spending, appropriations, budgets and contracts for the large standing Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force and DoD civilian workforce , obsolescent weapons systems and the state side bases and facilities. (Common Agenda Items #2 & #3) *3. Integrate the Federal Reserve into the Federal government as proposed in H.R. 2990. Government provide grants and/or zero interest loans directly to states, manufacturers and small businesses. (Common Agenda Item #8) *4. Recoup as much as possible of the $23.4 to $37 trillion provided by the Federal Reserve and the U.S. in bailouts, zero or very low interest loans and guaranties to American and foreign financial institutions. (Common Agenda Item #8) *5. Simplify and reform tax codes. (Common Agenda Item #7) a. Enact very progressive property/assets taxes on: i. Corporations, companies, hedge funds, shadowy banks, PACS, super PACS, and other entities. According to Forbes.com, the 528 largest U.S. corporations/companies have over $33.4 trillion of property/assets and are sitting on trillions in cash and are not investing or hiring. ii. Individuals, who in 2010, had $58 trillion of household property/assets. Some of this $58 trillion is probably double counted in the corporations $33.4 trillion. It is safe to say that there is at least $70 trillion in taxable assets and property. Most of which is concentrated in the 1% and the too big to fail. A very progressive property tax on the $70 trillion will reduce inequalities something that income taxes will not do as well be used to put a lot of people to work. b. Phase out/eliminate income, sales, gift, estate and the many minuscule taxes on phone, cable and utility bills as the property tax is implemented. Payroll taxes (social security and medicare) should probably be continued, at least for a while, so that individuals continue to be vested. Phasing out these taxes will also reduce inequalities. c. Provide varying degrees of tax deduction rates for charitable contributions by individuals and corporation depending upon the worthiness of the cause. d. Enact a “pure worldwide” tax system in which all taxes on property/assets whether they are located in the U.S. or abroad, are taxed by the U.S. e. End tax havens, transfer funds in tax havens to U. S. Banks and recoup the missed taxes on funds in tax havens f. Close corporate tax loopholes g. Enact a sales tax on derivatives sales until they are outlawed. *6. Eliminate military aid to foreign countries. *7. Eliminate bailouts and subsidies for corporations and other entities. *8. Use “time and materials” type contracts with no profits, overhead, G & A, fees or percentages for all government contracts and grants. Under these contracts the contractor or grantee is reimbursed for the actual salaries, wages and benefits paid to workers, managers and professionals for direct labor and the actual costs of “materials.” Salaries, wages and fringe benefits would be at local prevailing, living wages. These living wages would be based on Davis-Bacon type calculations with the coverage expanded to include managers, engineers, scientists and other professionals (Common Agenda Item #6) *9. Replace the Affordable Health Care for America Act with an Expanded and Improved Medicare For All Act, H.R. 676, which will save approximately $400 billion annually from decreased admin costs and insurance company overhead and profits. (Common Agenda Item #11) *10. Repeal the Medicare Prescription Drug Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003, which prohibited the Government from negotiating prices of prescription drugs and established a very complicated, expensive management system. Recoup as much as possible of the unnecessary costs of at least $240 billion over the past six years. As of February 2009, the projected net cost of the program over the 2006 to 2015 time period was $549.2 billion ^ 2009 ANNUAL REPORT OF THE BOARDS OF TRUSTEES OF THE FEDERALHOSPITAL INSURANCE AND FEDERAL SUPPLEMENTARY MEDICAL INSURANCE TRUSTFUNDS, Table III.C19.—Operations of the Part D Account in the SMI Trust Fund (Cash Basis)during Calendar Years 2004-2018, Page 120 (Page 126 in pdf)http://www.cms.hhs.gov/ReportsTrustFunds/downloads/tr2009.pdf Close (Common Agenda Item #11) 11. Reprogram excess current spending, appropriations and budgets resulting from efforts under Common Agenda Item #4. Reform and Organize Congress and the Executive Department by Function - Responsibility and eliminate duplicated and unnecessary functions and waste, fraud and abuse. 12. Expose and block the CEO Campaign to ‘Fix' the Debt: a Trojan Horse for massive corporate tax breaks 13. Reduce high level public servant pay scales by amounts proportional to the amount of salary and change Government employment pay increases for inflation to fixed amounts instead of basing them on a percentage of pay. 14. Establish limits on the salaries of corporation executives (Common Agenda Item #9) 15. Eliminate patronage appointments. 16. As necessary, Congress "coin" high value $10 to $100 billion serialized coins (Ellen Brown's suggestion). IV. Conclusions: As these items are phased in and the Common Agenda accomplished unemployment will essentially disappear the so called fiscal cliff will become easily manageable, income, estate, gift, capitol gain, sales taxes can be phased out, inequalities will decrease, there will be no need for the recommendations of the Simpson-Bowles Commission and other austerity programs or to increase the national debt or its limit. Individuals will continue to pay payroll taxes to further strengthen Medicare and Social Security and so that they will be vested in it. Endnotes:

— Efland, 2012-12-18 22:10:35

She did nothing; I got her answering machine. And that is what I expect her to do in this case -- nothing. There is no leadership in Washington. They don't care about there constituents; and they certainly don't care anything about the poor or elderly. My Social Security check is less than $800 a month and they're pulling down well over $100,000 a year to do next to nothing. I am so disgusted with them, I can't put it into words.

I spoke at length to a member of the staff. when asked directly he said she does not favor cuts to SS and Medicare as part of the budget deal.

— Snow Hill, 2012-12-19 14:23:25

Do not mess with our social security. We worked for every penny of it and more. We need lots of extra money to live off instead of trying to grab the little bit we are receiving. "Get The Rich"

I left a positive and informative message w/ Senator Hagan about hands of SS and no tax cuts for the super rich! Thanks.

— Oak Ridge, 2012-12-20 11:01:49

I spoke to a staffer who said Sen. Hagan is against cuts to Social Security.

— Raleigh, 2012-12-20 12:32:27

I talked about the fact that older retirees get less money even with the current way of calculating cost of living increases because benefits are calculated on salaries and salaries were lower before. I heard this from an economist who expects this to continue. Staffer said she would pass that on. She sounded harried and the phone was ringing in the background!

— asheville, 2012-12-20 12:49:13

Sen Hagan's admin. office staff named Emily stated that Sen. Hagan understands that seniors do not need their benefits cut and is definitely against this action. I just started benefits and after expenses and meds. I can't afford grocery. Am looking for part time employment to stay afloat.

Went by today, 12/27, and her Raleigh office was closed. Guard said a bunch of people had come to try to visit.

— Raleigh, 2012-12-27 09:27:00

No answer I guess the Government is still on vacation even though we have a big problem. I think we should fire them all and rehire people that want to work. Tyro N.C.

— linwood, 2012-12-28 05:30:37

Dear Senator Hagan, The state has already cut dental medical coverage for the poor and state services for public sector;yet, the very rich have not paid their fair share of taxes since the Bush adminstration. Why does'nt the IRS go after these people? Isn't it against the law not to pay taxes? I am tired of the loop hole. The poor like it when their services were cut. My mother is retired and what kind of country is that penalizes the poor and continueally creates loopholes for the rich. Now, the rich don't want their taxes raised. Well, they have gotten a break for the last several years. Now, it is time to pay up for what their taxe breaks. It is just wrong. Congress must act and look at for the poor and middle classes instead of making the people pay so that rich don't pay their fair share.
