I'm sure both are on the humane side of this issue, but the more voices the better, especially since they may need to oppose the president on this one.

— Grand Rapids, 2012-12-18 09:24:41

I think MoveOn should get off this fight. Social Security is not sustainable in its current form. It needs to be revised, and this is a small change in comparison to the changes that could be made.

— Mount Pleasant, 2012-12-18 09:26:57

Do not touch social security, ,medicare and medicaid. Do not balance the budget on the backs of pood people. We are supposed to help people in need.

— Kalamazoo, 2012-12-18 09:34:02

I called both the DC # and the local one. Could not leave a message--box was full on the first # and no pickup on the 2nd #. SS can be fixed by raising the cap, and maybe also raising the contribution by half a %. SS is the most successful program ever of the USG. It just needs tweeking, but not cuts. Hey, I would like to see big CEOs and congresspeople live on SS! Wouldn't that be interesting?

— frankfort, 2012-12-18 09:34:45

I voted for you and there is NO reason to negotiate with GOP terrorists. NONE. they have screwed this country for far too long. apparently they weren't paying attention during the election. don't give them a damn thing. there is no reason to cave in to the demands of congressmen that are nothing but paid mouthpieces for the 1% of richest americans. please stand up for the rest of us. thank you. sincerely Christopher Potas Trenton MI

— trenton, 2012-12-18 09:35:29

Senator Stabenow's mailbox was full but I was able to leave a message for Senator Levin. My message: don't touch Social Security and don't increase the Medicare age. In regards to Medicare, I mentioned that if the age was increased, that would leave our the well seniors 65 & 66 yrs old, out of contributing to the Medicare pool.

— Scio Township, 2012-12-18 10:08:40

I sent an e-mail to Senator Stabenow, her voice mail box was full.

— Ann Arbor, 2012-12-18 10:22:42

Left a message for Sen Stabenow and talked to an aid for Senator Levin. I indicated the following: Dear Senator Stabenow, I think the majority of Americans agree that as part of the fiscal deal, we/you should ensure we do not see any benefit cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. They also believe the wealthiest 2% should pay more taxes. I believe we need to go back to the tax rates of the Clinton year. I add here that Social Security is not an entitlement program; rather, we pay into this program each year and it should be seen as an earned benefit program.. I retired from the Army in 1990 after 20 yrs in the military and a combat tour in Vietnam. I'm willing to pay a bit more in taxes if we can ensure those less fortunate are taken care of with backstop programs such as Social Security.. response to this email.. Thanks Ken P The Aid for Senator Levin indicated that the Senator was aware how important the Social Security Safety new was to Americans and he would pass on my message to Senator Levin

— Buchanan, 2012-12-18 10:24:33

You of all people, know what the Republicans have done to the teacher retirement in our state. My wife and I have $300 less a month due to increases in our supplemental insurance and the fact that a portion of our teacher retirement income is now taxed. Now the possibility of our Social Security will be cut! How were we to plan for these decreases in our retirement income? Social Security is not the problem! It is fully funded! DO NOT let the Republicans hurt retired people during the fiscal cliff debate!!!

— Mears, 2012-12-18 10:28:32

no response to. phone call

— Grand Rapids, 2012-12-18 10:34:41

— TRAVERSE CITY, 2012-12-18 10:36:09

Please Debbie do everything you can to stop cuts in the Social Security benefits. We worked hard all of our lifes and(Military service) for the promise of the Americn dream!

— Shelby Twp., 2012-12-18 10:38:01

Social Security would be funded in perpetuity with one simple step...withhold FICA from all wage earners not just those below a certain yearly maximum, (which my husband and I have never exceeded...) My ss is already too low I had to take it early due to the chronic wage stagnation and over-taxation of the middle class.

— Birmingham, 2012-12-18 10:39:30

Just left a voice mail message for each of them

— Vero Beach, 2012-12-18 10:40:21

Just sent a message regarding Sen. Stabenow. Correction!! She does not propose cuts in SS. Spoke to her Lansing Office in MI.

— Hubbard Lake, 2012-12-18 11:06:47

I do not wish to see a 2% cut to social security. I worked in the U.S. for 18 years and because I also worked in Canada, I receive the paltry sum of $98 per month.

— Southfield, 2012-12-18 11:06:54

I left messages for both Sen. Levin/Stabenow

— detroit, 2012-12-18 11:30:49

i SPOKE TO THE STAFF IN BOTH OFFICES AND LET THEM KNOW i EXPECT THEM TO STAND STRONG AGAINST ANY CUTS IN SS. ALSO, PLEASE LET THE PRESIDENT KNOW THIS WAS MY "MAKE ME DO IT" CALL.

— Detroit, 2012-12-18 11:37:11

Spoke to a staffer who provided a well rehearsed response to my question, saying that Stabenow is a strong supporter of Social Security and Medicare. The staffer would not provide any assurance that Stabenow would oppose a "chained CPI" or changes in Medicare age of eligibility. I also emailed both Levin and Stabenow opposing the "chained CPI."

— Redford Twp, 2012-12-18 12:30:31

Left a message for Carl Levin, but pressed #3 and spoke to a real person who assured me that the Senator was on the same side of this issue as I was. I realize now that I should have left my name!

— Lansing , 2012-12-18 12:39:15

Do not change our hard earned Social Security benefits. It's time to have the top 2% pay their fair share to support the government, not just 13% 0r 14%!

— Northville, 2012-12-18 12:40:03

I left a message for Levin, Stabenow's box was full and was asked to try again later (I will). I think the object of the radical right is more about undermining ss than balancing the budget.

— bath, 2012-12-18 12:40:21

Support Social Security not only for seniors, of which I am one, but for future generations. The rich keep getting richer on the backs of the middle class and the poor. Work for an egalitarian government and society on our behalf.

— Grand Blanc, 2012-12-18 12:44:11

Stabenow had a full mailbox, left a message to Levin's. I live on Social Security and that is all,, I can't afford any less.

Left message for CL, DS's mail box was full, "DO NOT Mess WITH SS!"

— Ypsilanti, 2012-12-18 12:54:45

Mailbox was full so called back and talked with staffer, made it clear SS, Medicare, & Medicaid should not be touched. Plenty of other places to either cut or raise revenues. Aid was polite but basically said it's between Obama and Boehner right now, wouldn't give an answer definitely.

— Scio Township, 2012-12-18 12:55:44

Stabenow will not support cuts Levin's office would not give a clear answer

— Garden City, 2012-12-18 13:03:20

— Traverse City, 2012-12-18 13:03:35

— Horton, 2012-12-18 13:03:49

mail boxes full. sent an email then

— Wellston, 2012-12-18 13:05:07

I talked to staff in both Senator's offices. Both said they would relay my comments to the Senator. Man in Sen. S's office indicated agreement with my points(SS didn't contribute to fiscal crisis, was currently solvent and could be made more so by raising the cap, was the main source of income for the most vulnerable, unfairness of asking retirees to pay for excesses of wall street, mortgage brokers. Bush tax cuts , 2 ill advised wars, medicare part D as written to benefit big pharma and other policies which mainly benefit the wealthy are also the cause. To fix it, go to the people and corporations who have benefited most, not those who have the least. Suggested a small tax on every wall street transaction.) The one possible change involving SS which might be palatable could involve means testing for benefits if done right. President and other Democrats were elected after promising to protect SS, medicare, medicaid. Now, they have to honor those commitments and look for solutions from those with the most resources who have received most of the benefits for the last 30 years.

— Lake Orion, 2012-12-18 13:06:13

Stabenow's box was full. I couldn't get through. I talked to an aid in Levin's office. He said he would pass the message on to him

— flint, 2012-12-18 13:11:54

Sen. Stabenow: I spoke to office rep and she said that the Senator will not support any cuts in Soc Sec benefits. Sen Levin office rep said he would pass on my opinion of leaving all benefits in place.

— HARRISVILLE, 2012-12-18 13:17:01

Spoke with staff. Both promised to relay my sentiments to their bosses. I ask for senators to make no deal that involves cuts to benefits.

— Hamtramck, 2012-12-18 13:22:05

I also requested that they do everything in their power to not capitulate to the Republicans and increase only those who make over 400K as reported this morning. First off, it is not a tax increase - it is a tax rate reinstatement since these cuts were only supposed to be temporary. Cutting out the 250-399K sector will not help revenues.

— royal oak, 2012-12-18 13:22:10

Left messages at both offices! I hope they are listening!

— Belleville, 2012-12-18 13:23:12

— Detroit, 2012-12-18 13:37:58

Sen Stabenow is against cuts to social security. Apparently Sen Levin has no position on this, which is a disappointment.

— Grand Ledge, 2012-12-18 13:40:09

I just spoke with folks in both their offices and made our position clear. I live on less than $9,000 per year right now from SS and cannot afford to live on much less.

— Daerborn, 2012-12-18 13:42:11

Left a msg for Stabenow.

— Eaton Rapids, 2012-12-18 13:42:40

— , 2012-12-18 14:06:48

I spoke with a representative of Sent. Levin who stated he would relay my message. Sen. Stabenow's voice mail was too full to leave a message and I will try again tomorrow.

— Fenton, 2012-12-18 14:13:30

Left message with Carl Levin opposed to cuts. Debbie Stabenows mailbox was full. I will try again.

— Roscommon,, 2012-12-18 14:15:09

Sen. Stabenow's mailbox was full and I was unable to get thru.

— Maple City, 2012-12-18 14:25:57

Senator Levin and Stebenow 's representative took the call because their mail boxes are full. Both mentioned that they will pass the message alog, however, both senators would not be in favor of deal that would cut Social Security and medicare.

— Ann Arbor, 2012-12-18 14:26:27

I am opposed to Social Security changes that would create more hardship for the elderly and disabled. It's not fair that they have worked so hard, paid into the system at such high rates and now have to be put on the chopping block. I don't have a problem with sacrificing something to help my country, but where does it stop? I ask you what are they who are on this fixed income to do? Please do not allow the Republicans to squeeze you into giving the rich slack at the cost of those who do not have it to give.

— Harper Woods, 2012-12-18 14:29:07

no cuts to ss

— chesterfield, 2012-12-18 14:34:37

Senator Stabenow, I urge you to hold strong on the budget deal when it comes to cuts to so called "entitlements" like Social Security. Frankly, I resent the pejorative manner in which the word "entitlements" is used in reference to these programs given people like me have been paying into the system all of our working lives. I began working as a kid. In fact, I needed a work permit in order to do so. Therefore, when I hear political leaders referring to such "benefits" as "entitlements" it raises the hair on the back of my neck. People are entitled when we have faithfully worked and payed into this system all of our lives and happily so. I am grateful for a system that supports people so they do not slip into abject poverty in their senior years. I am grateful for a country that seeks to care for its people and the common good. And I do not resent paying into the system whatsoever, but I want that system to stand strong against political pressures to reduce payouts when opponents refuse to raise tax rates for the Warren Buffets so they are paying at least the same percentage in taxes as are their housekeepers. It's simply unethical that such unfairness exists in such a great country. Again, I urge you to stand strong against Republican pressures to cut SS benefits. I believe you and other Democrats will be rewarded with strong support for doing so.

— Midland, 2012-12-18 14:35:15

MI Sen. Stabenow's voice mailbox still full at 5:30 pm; called back & talked to staffer who assured me Stabenow opposes cuts. Talked to staffer in MI Sen. Levin's office who said he'd pass on my msg.

— Grosse Pointe Woods, 2012-12-18 14:35:54

I spoke to a rep at both offices they are adding my call to their list of agregates

— Hadley, 2012-12-18 14:37:55

Dear Honorable Senator Stabenow, Hope you are doing well. I would like to send my comment about the social security that is being discussed to be a part of the negotiations for a deal. I totally oppose it and I would like to see your support to keep ss and medicare intact as it is in a present. I am sure you have the same feeling as you promised during the elections.

— , 2012-12-18 14:39:18

Neither Senator's staff mentioned any commitment to stop any deal, but did commit to 'resisting' one. I also told Senator Stabenow's staffer that I wanted the 15% tax limit on capital gains to be eliminated, and that I would rather see us go over the 'fiscal cliff' than see that gimme to the ultra rich stay in place.

— Ferndale, 2012-12-18 14:42:59

Left a message with Senator Stabenow.

— Kalamazoo, 2012-12-18 14:50:45

— Lawrence, 2012-12-18 15:07:39

Left message for both Senators.

— Vermontville, 2012-12-18 15:27:55

You ran on the ticket of being a champion for the seniors. Go back on your word and you will never go any further politically in this state. I was hoping you would run against that assless nerd Snyder, but if you vote for any concessions on social security, you will never be taken seriously again by the voters of the State of Michigan.

— Maybee, 2012-12-18 15:52:46

Told them there was no way we could afford anymore cuts that all we will be doing is surviving not living just existing.

— Pinconning, 2012-12-18 15:56:55

Spoke with aide in Stabenow's office because when you press1 to leave a message it kept hanging up on me! No commitment would only pass it along

— Ypsilanti, 2012-12-18 16:00:55

Very very disgusted tonight, totally shocked that President Obama has put Social Security on the table after promising that wouldn't be considered. Once again WE seniors are being left behind. Sad to say we can't trust anyone to keep promised made.

left message with their office people on 12/18/2013

— Shelby Township, 2012-12-18 18:49:45

Dear Senator Stabenow: PLEASE do not vote to cut social security, medicare or medicaid. I have been paying in to these programs for 28 years with the understanding that I would have them at age 65 when I retire. The age has already been raised on me. Is it my fault that previous generations could not shore up the program? In the 90s heydays, why wasn't the surplus put into SS? NOT my fault, shouldn't be my problem. "Entitlements" are not bad - I am entitled to the money I paid in. VOTE NO to any more cuts to social security and medicare. Eric Crimmins Royal Oak

Please stop Corporate Welfare instead of allowing the GOP to attack MY Social Security. Talk to your colleague, Bernie Sanders about how much Corporate welfare Exxon Mobil receives. END THAT, NOT MY Social Security benefits. My COLA this year was nothing more than a pittance. Shameful, and now some idiot wants to take that from me? It should not happen, as gasoline is still well over $3.00 a gallon.

— , 2012-12-19 06:05:11

Senator Stabenow's office was very clear that she did not support any changes to Social Security or Medicate. I cannot say the same about Senator Levin's office. I had to keep pressing about what his position was. I told his assistant that we don't need democrats that are not supporting seniors on this issue. I also said that Senator Levin is in Washington to support us and that is what he should do. I think others should call Senator Levin's office so that we can all feel comfortable that he is supporting seniors.

— Detroit, 2012-12-19 06:12:54

You and the president caved in 2010 and now the president has shown what a lousy negotiator his his once again. Are we a country of and for the rich or of and for the people. This time the people will not take kindly to weak and cowardly democrats. For heavens sake we all voted for you and the president because we believed what he was saying. Going off the cliff would be better than the presidents pathetic cave. The SPELUNKER in chief.

it is important to remember that if someone has a differing opinion, he/she is not necessarily WRONG. I called both Senators and stated my view that Social Security should not be in the "deal". It has not contributed to the deficit and any adjustments can be made at a later time with lots of preliminary thought.

dear sentors I am one of the many who depended on social security. I can assure you that this deal I have read about, will in a short time destroy me. With every new year my cost for every day things goes up and my income seems to always go down I ask you this now, how can I to continue to cut cost when I am already on life suport. It seems that every time cost have to be cut in is always the people who can lease afford it that must make the most cuts.As always the rich own the goverment and therfor the poor must suffer. Things need to change .If history has tought us any thing, its that people will only take so much before they start fighting back.

I'm new to Social Security this year and it's all I have for income. In 2013 I get 1.7% more, but REAL inflation was more like 2.7%, at least by how Royal Oak city taxes were raised. And food looks to be going tup about 20%, as of January 2013. Keep COL as is, and don't screw with Medicare.

Doesn't believe in it. I think it's because of all the politics in the issue. What exactly is being cut? Why? How? These questions need to be answered to vote on such issues! Ignorance does Not fix ignorance. I support Senator Stabenow, but am confused at why she opposes this other than what I have mentioned. Medicare is defunct and is letting fraud happen everyday, that is a big waste of money. Medicare recently passed a contract with 18 medical companies and one at the top is the biggest fraud of all. I have been reporting them since 2007 with no results. Every order from them is wrong and they do not care except to bill Medicare. CCS Medical should NOT have a Medicare contract! All of our polititians need to actually do some research and not leave it to us constituents. I am tired of reporting all the fraud and waste I witness and nothing being done about it!

We do not share the information you’ve given us with unaffiliated groups without your explicit permission.

Petitions and Surveys

For petitions and surveys you've signed or completed, we treat your name, city, state, and comments as public information - for example, we may provide compilations of petitions, with your comments, to the President and legislators, other targets, or to the press. We will not make your street address publicly available, but we may transmit it to members of Congress and to the President as part of a petition. This is a standard industry practice in such situations. In no such case will we disclose your email address or phone number without your permission. We may also make your comments, along with your first name, city, and state available to the press and public online.

Under circumstances where we determine that members may be misusing our systems for malicious purposes (for example, using the numbers we provide to make harassing phone calls), such activities may be reported to law enforcement agencies. In such cases, MoveOn may release personally identifiable information, including name and address, to those agencies.
